Jonathan is an ecologist with extensive experience of working on mining and environmental issues worldwide. During the formative years of EIA development during the 1980s, he worked in the UK and South Africa for government agencies in the spheres of nature conservation, environmental planning, and EIA development.
After 14 years of working with government he moved to BirdLife International, the world’s largest conservation NGO partnership network (120 countries), where he spent 13 years developing and managing a strategic partnership program with mining companies such as Rio Tinto, Anglo American, ERAMET, and others, in environments ranging from deserts to wetlands, savanna, and tropical forests.
In 2014, Jonathan joined The Asia Foundation in Mongolia to manage a project focusing on the environmental performance of Artisanal and Small-scale Mining (ASM). The Engaging Stakeholders in Environmental Conservation (ESEC II) project implemented human rights-based approaches for Environmental Management Planning (EMP) and was particularly successful in developing, and implementing a Frugal Rehabilitation Methodology (FRM), a practical approach to ASM site rehabilitation that espouses economic affordability, social acceptability, and ecological viability.
Jonathan holds a BSc Hons in Environmental Biology and a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education from the University College of Wales, as well as a Post-Graduate Certificate in Cross-Sector Partnership from the University of Cambridge.
