Dr Paul Mitchell holds a Minerals Engineering degree and PhD from Camborne School of Mines and is an extractives environmental specialist with more than 30 years of experience working with industry, regulators, NGO and communities to analyse, design and implement appropriate solutions to environmental, social, governance and health & safety issues.
Paul has substantial global experience in the mining sector, including a broad range of mineral and metal commodities, including base and precious metals, minor metals, industrial minerals, coal and other energy minerals, aggregates, strategic metals, rare earth elements and gemstones. Having worked in more than 50 countries, he has a detailed understanding of different regulatory and legislative regimes across the extractive industries lifecycle (from exploration to closure) and has worked on extractives projects in Africa, Europe, the Americas and Asia.
He has extensive global experience of undertaking desktop and site-based assessments, audits, reviews and research related to industrial mining operations. Most of this work has been undertaken in the context of IFC, World Bank and other international standards. In addition, Paul has undertaken extensive field-based and desktop research on artisanal and small-scale mining, including issues relating to technical and logistical challenges, the optimisation of mining and processing methods, identification and management of environmental and social impacts, delivery of technical and training services and improving health and safety standards.
