Goals: Strengthen the proposed EU Regulation on Batteries and Waste Batteries to ensure that only batteries sourced with the highest social and environmental standards are ultimately placed on the EU market.
Approach: The Levin Sources team, lead by Blanca Racionero Gomez and Cyril Jobard, carried out a desk-based inventory of environmental instruments best-suited to address the proposed environmental risk categories listed in Annex X of the draft EU Regulation: air, pollution, water, soil, emissions, biodiversity, climate change, and waste treatment.
We first drew a long list of different instruments before categorising them by criteria including relevance, endorsements at the EU level, concrete guidance for companies and minerals in scope. The selected tools can support company compliance with the current draft regulation.
Output: The comprehensive report summarises the most relevant instruments categorised as international, European Union frameworks and private initiatives. T&E can use the report to push for more comprehensive regulations while automotive companies can use it as a reference document to check other instruments they can adhere to in order to support compliance with the draft EU Regulation on Batteries and Waste Batteries.
