Making the impact of the minerals sector on people and planet more positive, more sustainable, and more just has never been an easy proposition. The last few weeks in particular – with rapid, unprecedented movements by some states with massive (potential) impacts for communities, workers, ecosystems and climate – have been very tough to experience for us and our valued community of co-practitioners, experts, conveners, and worker and community representatives.
In these challenging times, we wanted to share a few reflections about the now and the future. Levin Sources has existed for 15 years, driven by a profound belief that there are achievable pathways to a more sustainable, responsible minerals sector. 15 years ago, this belief sometimes felt like a mirage. We made it our business to question, to listen, to innovate, to collaborate, to ask the right questions before they were popular or broadly accepted. This is still what we do every day. Over 15 years, we have seen many signs of progress in our sector, with shared benefits for businesses, governments, and affected people and environments.
These are not easy times by any means. Yet our conviction of what is possible – when we embrace what is right, what is achievable, what makes good common sense for business, states, and affected people and environments over the long-term – stands strong. We will continue doing the hard work: we’ve been doing it well before it felt ‘easier’, and we’ll continue it when it feels quite hard. We are inspired by those of you who we know are standing with us. In difficult times, the capacity of human beings to work together for the common good is what inspires us to carry on. We’re looking forward to carrying on with you.
