Levin Sources' Director Estelle Levin-Nally is chairing a session at the Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals and Sustainable Development (IGF) Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Geneva next Wednesday.

The panel for the session comprises:

  • Pippa Howard, Director, Business and Biodiversity, Flora & Fauna International
  • Nick Cotts, Vice President - Sustainability and External Relations, Newmont Mining Corporation
  • Luis Miguel Inchaustegui Zevallos, Viceminister of Mines, Ministry of Energy and Mines, Peru

From the draft agenda:

Mining accounts for approximately seven per cent of forest loss globally. As the global demand for mined materials continues to grow, mining operations are increasingly expected to move into further remote and often forested regions. This session will present new research on “forest-smart mining,” identifying factors associated with the impacts of both large-scale mining and artisanal and small-scale mining on forests. The session will discuss the significant direct and indirect impacts mining has on forest landscapes and provides a series of recommendations to mitigate impacts on forests in mining areas.

The session is at 1145–1300 on Wednesday October 17th 2018. It will be held in Room XXVI, Palais des Nations, Geneva, Switzerland.
